En-bloc resection of a giant chest wall tumour and skeletal reconstruction with methyl methacrylate in a resource poor environment: case report

چکیده
We describe a 42 year old man who presented to us with a left lateral chest wall mass of 2 years duration. It has been increasing in size since it was noticed, initially painless but became painful 2 months prior to presentation. No history of trauma to the chest and no cough or haemoptysis. He is a known hypertensive regular on his medications. Examination revealed a left lateral chest wall mass, firm in consistency, non-tender, measuring 26 × 18 × 10 cm. He had reduced air entry on the left middle and lower lung zones. Chest X-ray shows a left lateral soft tissue mass with homogenous opacity involving the left middle and lower lobes. Chest CT scan shows a left soft tissue mass with intrathoracic extension and destruction of the 4th and 5th ribs. There is also compressive atelectasis of the left middle and lower lobes. No features suggestive of underlying lung pathology. He had en-bloc resection of the chest wall tumour and skeletal reconstruction with methyl metacrylate” sandwich” in prolene mesh. Postoperative recovery was uneventful and was discharged on the 14th day post-op. Histology of the tumour revealed a neurofibroma. We still see patients with giant chest wall tumours in this part of the world presenting only when the tumours are symptomatic. Even though these tumours can be huge, curative resection and skeletal reconstruction can be offered with good outcome. Surgical treatment outcome of giant cell tumor of distal ulna: En bloc resection vs. curettage and bone graft
Background: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign neoplasm with local aggressive behavior. Distal ulna is a very rare place for GCT. Published studies have mainly focused on case reports, and thus there is no consistent treatment strategy for this tumor at this location. This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the oncological and functional results of 2 di...
متن کاملReconstruction of the Second Metatarsal with Non-vascularised Fibular Graft following En-bloc Resection for Giant Cell Tumour: A Case Report
UNLABELLED Giant cell tumour in the metatarsal of a skeletally immature person is uncommon. Adequate surgical resection in this region can be difficult to achieve as there is little space between the rays of the foot. Furthermore, there is the challenge of restoring the metatarsophalangeal articulation after resection of the tumor. We describe a technique using non-vascularised fibular graft fo...

A 35-year-old male presented with a history of chest wall pain and swelling. It was decided to perform a CT-scan of the thorax that revealed of a rib involvement in the right hemithorax (Fig 1). We evaluated the yield of core needle biopsy in patients that the was diagnosed lymphoproliferative disorder. Investigation abdominal and pelvic CT scan and blood tests were found no other lesions. The ...
متن کاملFree Tensor Fascia Lata Flap and Synthetic Mesh Reconstruction for Full-Thickness Chest Wall Defect
A large full-thickness chest wall defect over 10 cm in diameter requires skeletal reconstruction and soft tissue coverage. Use of various flaps for soft tissue coverage was previously reported, but en bloc resection in each case affects these flap pedicles and sizes. We present a case of a 74-year-old man with a soft tissue tumor involving the left lateral chest wall. We performed an en block r...
متن کاملA multidisciplinary approach to giant soft tissue sarcoma of the chest wall: A case report
INTRODUCTION Soft tissue sarcomas of the chest wall are exceptionally rare entities that present as painless slow growing masses. Resection is often precarious due to involvement of vital structures, and patients are left with large chest wall defects postoperatively requiring extensive reconstruction. PRESENTATION OF CASE We present a case report of a 29 year-old man who presented with a gia...
